Emerging Standards

Stages

A Stage marks how far along a topic currently is, from first being raised through active work to being ready for broader use.

Parked

Parked topics are intentionally paused while dependencies or timing constraints are addressed.

Monitor

Monitor topics are active efforts being tracked for readiness and real-world momentum.

Gather

Gather topics are collecting broader input from implementers and stakeholders.

Start

Start topics are beginning active development work toward practical implementation.

Draft

Draft topics are early-stage ideas gathering initial interest and problem framing.

Pilot

Pilot topics are in trial implementations to validate feasibility and workflow impact.

Rollout

Rollout topics are ready for broader adoption and implementation support.

Advancement Paths

An Advancement Path describes what a topic currently needs in order to keep moving forward, such as funding, a decision, technical direction, or outside participation.

Working on Now

The next meaningful work is understood, owned, and moving forward without a material constraint.

External Effort

Advancement depends on a decision, deliverable, policy, specification, or participation that is outside the direct control of Emerging Standards.

Sponsorship or Resources Needed

The work is understood, but advancement requires funding, staff capacity, organizational prioritization, or leadership sponsorship.

Community Participation Needed

Advancement requires engagement, commitment, testing, feedback, or evidence from jurisdictions, vendors, users, or other stakeholders.

Use Case or Value Needs Clarification

The problem, intended users, expected value, or priority is not sufficiently clear to justify or direct further advancement.

Technical Direction Needed

Advancement requires agreement on architecture, scope, standards approach, design, feasibility, or competing technical options.

No Active Advancement

The topic and its history are being retained, but no meaningful next step is currently planned.

Neighborhoods

Advanced Access

New technologies to give access to immunization data in IIS beyond what is currently offered by HL7 v2.

CDS

Clinical decision support or immunization forecasting.

Consumer Access

Providing patients with immunization information access and control.

Data Quality

Improving the quality of data in immunization systems is a continuous process. Crosses over with HL7 v2.

FHIR

Fast Healthcare Interoperabilty, the latest HL7 standard for healthcare interoperability.

HL7 v2

IIS in the US still transmit the bulk of their data via HL7 v2 VXU and RSP messages. There will continue to be new and continuing work in this area.

Inventory

Improvements to how inventory is tracked locally and coordinated with IIS.

Modularity

Interoperability between modular services (building blocks) for IIS functionality.

National

Standards that support CDC efforts to coordinate US immunization activities.

School

Any interachange between public health and education institutions.

Support

Technologies that could support IIS operations but may or may not be used directly by external systems.

TEFCA

Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement is a U.S. government-led initiative aimed at creating a nationwide, secure network for sharing electronic health records (EHR) among providers, patients, and insurers.

Terminology

Standards that support the dissemination and use of coded values such as CVX and NDC.
